About Robert C. Gerhard
Robert C. Gerhard III built his credential list deliberately. He earned a B.A. in Policy and Management Studies and Classics from Dickinson College in 1992. He received his J.D. from Dickinson School of Law in 1995 and added an LL.M. in Taxation from Villanova University School of Law in 1998. Those years set the frame for a practice that sits at the intersection of elder law and tax issues.
He began practicing in 1995 and has practiced under the name Gerhard & Gerhard, P.C. since that time. Early on he concentrated on matters that affect older clients and their families. Over the decades he has handled the routine and the complex in that area, developing procedural familiarity with probate, benefits planning and the regulatory questions that arise for people planning for long-term care.
Tax training informs much of his work. The LL.M. in Taxation allows him to consider income and transfer tax consequences when he drafts documents or structures plans. That technical background is paired with hands-on experience counseling clients about the practical trade-offs that come with different approaches to asset preservation and transfer.
Gerhard is a Certified Elder Law Attorney through the National Elder Law Foundation. That credential signals a structured body of knowledge in elder law and related fields. He has also taken on leadership roles in the local and state bar communities over many years. He served as chair of the Elder Law Committee of the Montgomery Bar Association and remains active on that committee. He led the Elder Law Section of the Pennsylvania Bar Association in the past, holding the section chair position in 2010.
His peers have recognized him through election and membership in professional organizations. He was president-elect of the Pennsylvania Association of Elder Law Lawyers for the 2018–2020 term. Since 2019 he has been a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel. He has been a member of the Montgomery County Estate Planning Council since 2013.
Clients and colleagues see him as an attorney who brings technical tax study and long experience in elder law to routine estate planning tasks and to the thornier questions that arise when benefits and family dynamics intersect. He maintains an active practice at Gerhard & Gerhard, P.C., handling elder law matters and related estate and tax planning work.
He currently focuses his practice on elder law, estate planning and the tax aspects of those matters.
