About Robert
Robert Battle built a legal career that began in the courtroom and kept returning there. He studied economics as an undergraduate and later trained in law, finishing his J.D. in the mid-1980s. Those early years shaped how he approaches cases today: plainly, practically and with attention to procedure.
He completed a Bachelor of Arts in Economics at the University of Notre Dame in 1977. He then earned a Juris Doctor from the College of William and Mary in 1984. After law school he spent a year clerking for United States District Court Judge James Cacheris. That clerkship placed him inside federal courtroom routines and case management at an early point in his career.
In 1986 he moved into public prosecution, serving as an Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney in Fairfax County. That role provided extended trial experience and familiarity with local criminal practice. He handled matters that required courtroom readiness and regular interaction with investigative agencies. The time in the Commonwealth's Attorney's Office gave him a practical sense of how cases develop from investigation to resolution.
He is admitted to practice in Virginia and before the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. Over the years he has stayed involved in professional groups connected to criminal defense and DUI law. He is a life member of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. He has been a member of the National College of DUI Defense since 2008 and was a founding member of the DUI Defense Lawyers Association in 2014. These memberships reflect sustained engagement with peers on evolving trial techniques and evidence issues.
His private practice is organized under the name Bob Battle Law. The firm handles criminal-defense matters and DUI-related cases. His background includes both prosecutorial work and federal clerkship experience, which he draws on in court. Colleagues and clients encounter an attorney who prioritizes clear courtroom presentation and procedural preparation over rhetoric.
Over a multi-decade career he has repeatedly returned to trial work and issues that hinge on evidence, procedure and witness handling. He has also handled matters that require appearances in federal court as well as state courts across Virginia. He continues to accept cases that involve contested DUI charges, criminal charges and related post-conviction issues.
He is currently in private practice at Bob Battle Law, where his work centers on defense of DUI and other criminal matters.
