About Rob

Rob McKinney is a Tennessee-educated lawyer whose work has been shaped by courtroom experience and long-standing involvement in the state’s criminal defense community. He earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from Tennessee Technological University and later took up legal studies at Nashville School of Law, receiving his J.D. in 1994. Those classroom years led directly into practical roles that informed his approach to litigation.

Early in his legal path McKinney served as a law clerk for the Davidson County Circuit Court in 1992. That year exposed him to case preparation, evidentiary hearings and the pace of local courts. He has said that the clerkship offered an inside view of how judges assess evidence and legal arguments, a perspective he has carried into his own practice.

McKinney’s membership in the Tennessee Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers dates back to 1994. He has taken on leadership roles in the organization, including serving as president, and he maintains life membership. Those years in the association put him in frequent contact with fellow defense practitioners across Tennessee. They also gave him a forum to discuss procedural issues, trial tactics and evolving criminal statutes.

Over the decades McKinney has built a practice centered on criminal defense. He represents clients in state court and appears in matters that reach the federal level. He is admitted to practice in Tennessee and before the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. His courtroom work ranges from arraignments and motions practice to trials and appellate filings. He has emphasized preparation and attention to procedural detail in casework. His earlier experience as a court clerk still informs how he prepares filings and anticipates judicial responses.

He operates under the firm name Rob McKinney Lawyer at Law. The firm handles a spectrum of criminal matters for individuals and, when appropriate, coordinates filings in both trial courts and appellate forums. McKinney balances time between client meetings, court appearances and association activities, and he continues to participate in professional discussions about criminal law practice in Tennessee.

Colleagues describe him as steady in court and methodical in case preparation. He remains an active member of the Tennessee criminal defense bar and continues to represent clients in Tennessee and the Sixth Circuit. He currently practices criminal defense out of his firm, Rob McKinney Lawyer at Law.
