About Rick

Rick Abelmann trained first as an economist and later as a lawyer. He earned a B.S. in economics from Brigham Young University and went on to receive his J.D. from Washington University School of Law in 2005. Those academic years set the contours of a career that moved quickly from large institutions to a regional practice of his own.

He began his legal career in 2005 as an associate at Clifford Chance, a global firm known for cross-border work. A year later he took a position as an associate at Morgan Stanley. Those early years placed him in environments where legal issues intersect with finance and institutional practice. In 2009 he shifted into private practice, becoming principal of Abelmann Law LLC.

Over the years Abelmann has built a practice centered on consumer bankruptcy and related matters. He is admitted to practice in New York and Hawaii. His membership in the National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Lawyers, which he has held since 2009, aligns with the casework he handles and the professional network he maintains. He also belongs to the Hawaii State Bar Association, maintaining ties to the local bench and bar in that state.

Abelmann’s work reflects both his early exposure to large-firm and financial-institution settings and his later focus on individual and consumer matters. He has experience drafting pleadings, advising clients on bankruptcy options, and representing individuals in Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 proceedings. The trajectory from firm associate to law firm principal suggests a practice shaped by both institutional knowledge and hands-on client work.

He currently practices through Abelmann Peterson LLLC. The office handles bankruptcy filings and related litigation. Colleagues and clients describe him as methodical in preparing cases and steady in the courtroom. He balances casework across jurisdictions where he is licensed, moving between New York and Hawaii depending on client needs.

Outside of litigation, Abelmann remains involved with professional groups that focus on bankruptcy practice. He participates in continuing legal education and stays active in bar association activities. His file includes work for individual debtors and creditors, and he continues to accept new matters that align with consumer bankruptcy and insolvency issues.

He maintains a practice that centers on consumer bankruptcy cases and related insolvency matters.
