About Richard

Richard Vlavianos built his legal foundation at two California schools. He earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of California, Davis and continued his studies at the University of the Pacific’s McGeorge School of Law, where he received his J.D. Those classroom years set the stage for a career spent in courtrooms rather than boardrooms.

He later took the bench at the San Joaquin Superior Court. As a judge, Vlavianos has been responsible for hearing and deciding a broad array of matters that come before California’s trial court. The records of a superior court are wide-ranging, and his role has required steady attention to procedure, evidence and the particular demands of the public docket.

Colleagues describe him as methodical. That is evident in the way he approaches hearings and writes rulings. He fashions decisions that aim to explain the court’s reasoning in clear terms. Clear explanation matters for litigants who depend on an understandable record for any potential appeal.

Before taking his current position, he completed the standard path of legal education and bar qualification that precedes judicial service. He moved from law school into the practical work of the law and then into the judiciary. The transition from advocate to arbiter altered his day-to-day responsibilities, but it relied on the same core skills he developed at UC Davis and McGeorge: analysis, attention to precedent and an ability to manage courtroom proceedings.

Vlavianos’s work on the bench involves frequent interaction with attorneys, jurors and court staff. He must balance courtroom efficiency with the procedural protections that safeguard litigants’ rights. Those demands shape his calendar and the daily rhythm of his work.

Outside of hearings, judges often spend time drafting opinions, reviewing pretrial filings and supervising court-managed matters. Vlavianos’s docket requires that same behind-the-scenes preparation. The public portion of his work—presiding over trials and oral arguments—complements the quieter but essential tasks of legal writing and case management.

He remains based at the San Joaquin Superior Court. He continues to serve on the bench, handling the range of cases that come before California’s trial court system.
