About Richard

Richard Steadman has been part of South Carolina’s legal landscape since he completed law school in 1981. He earned a Bachelor of Arts from Wofford College in 1976 and a Juris Doctor from the University of South Carolina in 1981. He became a member of the South Carolina Bar the same year and has maintained his bar membership continuously.

Steadman entered the profession at a time of change in both state and federal practice. The early years after his admission coincided with shifts in bankruptcy law and consumer protections. Over time he aligned his practice with the needs those shifts created. He built experience counseling individuals and businesses through insolvency problems, drafting filings, and working on cases that required careful negotiation with creditors.

His professional memberships reflect that orientation. He has been a member of the American Bar Association since 1981. He joined the National Consumer Bankruptcy Association in 2009 and continues that affiliation. Those associations keep him connected to developments in consumer bankruptcy and to colleagues who handle similar matters across the country.

Steadman’s work has often required balancing courtroom advocacy with transactional and counseling tasks. In some matters he has represented debtors seeking relief. In others he has advised on repayment plans and negotiated with creditors. He has spent time preparing filings under federal bankruptcy statutes and advising clients on the practical consequences of those filings for credit and property rights.

Clients and colleagues who have worked with him describe a lawyer who pays attention to procedural detail and who understands how timing and documentation affect outcomes. He approaches matters step by step, sorting through statutory requirements and local rules so clients know what to expect. He has kept up his professional affiliations and continued legal study to stay current on case law and rule changes.

Today Steadman remains active in the South Carolina legal community. He keeps involvement in the National Consumer Bankruptcy Association and the state and national bars. His current practice centers on consumer bankruptcy and related creditor-debtor matters.
