About Richard S.
Richard S. Gendler combines an academic track record with long practice in bankruptcy and tax law. He holds a Master of Taxation from Florida Atlantic University (2022), a J.S.D. and an LL.M. in Bankruptcy and Restructuring from Thomas Jefferson School of Law (2013 and 2009), a J.D. from the University of Miami School of Law (1992) and a B.A. in Psychology from the University of Hartford (1988). He has taught law at both Florida Atlantic University and Thomas Jefferson School of Law, where he also served as co-faculty director of the J.S.D. program.
Gendler began his legal career in the mid-1990s. He worked as an associate at Robbins, Tunkey, Ross, Amsel, Raben & Waxman, P.A. in 1995 and later at Marcia T. Dunn & Associates, P.A. in 1997. In 1998 he took on the role of managing shareholder at Richard S. Gendler & Associates, P.A., a position he has maintained while teaching and serving in various public roles. His public service includes a part-time appointment as a special magistrate for Palm Beach County in 2018 and other adjudicative roles.
Teaching and arbitration work have been a steady part of his professional life. In 2013 he joined Florida Atlantic University as a business law and ethics professor and coordinator. He returned to Thomas Jefferson School of Law in a part-time capacity as an adjunct professor and co-faculty director for the doctoral program. In arbitration, he has served under contract for FINRA in 2020 and for the National Center for Dispute Settlement, LLC in 2022. These assignments reflect years spent handling contested matters and procedural decision-making outside the courtroom.
Gendler participates in professional organizations tied to bankruptcy and general practice. He is a member of the American Bar Association, the American Bankruptcy Institute and the Bankruptcy Bar Association of the Southern District of Florida. He has been a member of the Florida State Bar since 1997. That combination of bar membership, academic work and arbitration service informs how he approaches client matters and tribunal settings.
Today he divides his time between practice, teaching and neutral roles. His practice emphasizes bankruptcy and restructuring work and tax issues arising in insolvency contexts. He also accepts arbitration and magistrate appointments and continues to teach courses related to business law and ethics.
