About Richard

Richard Berman began his legal journey at Pennsylvania State University, where he earned a B.S., and completed his law degree at Villanova University School of Law in 1973. Those years set the foundation for a career that has crossed state lines and courtrooms. He moved into practice during a period of regional civic activity and early media involvement.

Early in his career he was involved in Colorado’s legal and community life. He served as secretary of the Glenwood Springs Bar Association from the mid-1970s through the late 1980s. He was also a founding board member of KDNK Radio in Carbondale, Colorado, from 1977 to 1988. Those roles kept him connected to local institutions while he built a practice and professional network.

By the end of the 1980s his professional base had shifted to Hawaii. He holds membership in the Hawaii State Bar Association and the Maui County Bar Association, both active since 1989. During the early 1990s he took part in community governance as a board member of the Maui Humane Society from 1990 to 1992. He later served the State of Hawaii Judiciary as a per diem judge for the District Court of the Second Circuit from 2012 to 2015, presiding over matters on an intermittent judicial calendar.

Berman is admitted in multiple jurisdictions. His practice credentials include Pennsylvania and Colorado state bars, admission before the Executive Office for Immigration Review, and practice rights in Hawaii and the Federal District Court for the District of Hawaii. He has held membership in the American Immigration Lawyers Association since 2003. These admissions reflect a long involvement in immigration matters as well as state and federal trial work.

Over the years he has combined courtroom work, administrative advocacy, and community service. His résumé shows sustained engagement in both bar association activities and nonprofit boards, alongside periods of judicial service. He continues to handle cases that require appearances before administrative immigration bodies and federal courts.

He is currently affiliated with Immigration Maui Hawaii. He practices immigration law in Hawaii and in the other jurisdictions where he is admitted, representing clients in administrative and federal proceedings and advising on related immigration issues.
