About Richard A.

Richard A. Herman has practiced law and taught it for more than five decades. His career moves between government service, academia and private practice. He has spent years handling litigation, teaching students and training mediators.

Herman’s early teaching began in 1972 as an instructor at the University of Miami Law School. Two years later he entered public service as Deputy Lawyer General for the State of New Jersey. In 1978 he took a position as Professor of Law at Albany Law School. Those roles cemented a routine of alternating classroom work and hands-on legal practice.

In 1984 Herman established his own practice and has served as the managing member of The Herman Law Office since then. That long-term practice appears alongside periodic academic appointments. In 2014 he returned to teaching in a different capacity, lecturing on mediation at William Paterson University. His profile shows a willingness to move between the courtroom, the classroom and alternative dispute resolution forums.

More recently he joined Semeraro & Fahrney as of counsel in 2024. That role adds an external advisory capacity to his ongoing private practice. The of-counsel title reflects an experienced lawyer who consults on cases and mentors younger attorneys while continuing to manage matters at his own firm.

Herman’s association work is broad. He is a member of the American Bar Association and the New Jersey State Bar Association. At the state level he serves as a trustee of the New Jersey Association of Professional Mediators and of Northeast New Jersey Legal Services. He is also active in the Passaic County Bar Association and in LERA. Those affiliations track a career that blends courtroom experience, mediation training and public service.

Colleagues describe a lawyer who has moved comfortably between roles: teacher, government lawyer, firm manager and mediator. His teaching stints and trustee positions suggest a particular interest in dispute resolution and access to legal services. The sequence of appointments—law school instructor, deputy lawyer general, law professor, managing member of a private firm, mediation lecturer and of counsel—maps a long professional arc.

As of 2026 Herman maintains his managing role at The Herman Law Office while serving as of counsel to Semeraro & Fahrney. His current practice centers on mediation, civil litigation and advising clients and younger lawyers on case strategy.
