About Renee
Renee Wagenaar built her academic foundation in the liberal arts and social sciences before turning to law. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science and psychology from Calvin College in 2000. She continued at Western Michigan University for a master’s degree, completed in 2004, and returned to Western Michigan University Cooley Law School for her J.D., awarded in 2011. The sequence of degrees reflects an interest in how institutions and human behavior intersect, a background that informs her approach to legal work.
After graduating from law school, Wagenaar established herself in Michigan’s legal community. She has been a member of the Grand Rapids Bar Association since 2011, participating in local professional activities and connecting with colleagues across practice areas. Over time she has worked on a range of matters that arise in state courts and administrative settings. Colleagues describe her as methodical in preparing cases and careful in courtroom presentations.
Wagenaar’s training in political science and psychology continues to shape her courtroom style and client interactions. She combines an understanding of legal doctrine with attention to the practical effects of decisions on people and organizations. That perspective shows up in case strategy, witness preparation, and written advocacy. She tends to approach complex matters by breaking them into component parts, clarifying issues for clients and for triers of fact.
In Grand Rapids she has handled matters that require both negotiation and litigation. She is comfortable in hearings and prefers to give clients direct assessments of risk and timing. Those practical assessments help clients decide whether to pursue settlement or proceed to trial. She also spends time on pretrial work, researching and drafting motions and building factual records to support legal theories.
Wagenaar maintains an office at 29 Pearl Street NW, Suite 421 in Grand Rapids. From that base she serves individuals and businesses across Michigan. Her peers in the local bar know her for steady preparation and clear oral argument. She keeps active in local bar activities and continues to develop her practice in the Grand Rapids legal market.
Her current practice centers on state law matters for clients in the Grand Rapids area.
