About Ralph

Ralph Paterno has been a dedicated advocate for injured workers in California since 1988. His experience in workers' compensation law began shortly after he was admitted to the State Bar of California in 1987. In 2005, Paterno joined Boxer+Gerson, LLP, a prominent law firm where he currently splits his time between the Oakland headquarters and the Santa Rosa office. This collaboration has allowed him to deepen his expertise and broaden his impact in the field of workers’ rights. Prior to his tenure at Boxer+Gerson, Paterno served as a partner at Airola, Williams, Otis and Paterno from 1990 to 1992.

This role provided him with inexperience in navigating complex legal issues related to workers' compensation claims. Following his partnership, he established his own law practice in Oakland, where he continued to represent injured workers with a strong commitment to justice and advocacy. His legal career reflects a consistent focus on the needs of those who have suffered workplace injuries, ensuring they receive the benefits and support they deserve. In addition to his legal practice, Paterno has contributed to the field in various capacities. He has served as a mediator for both the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and the California Department of Insurance, utilizing his negotiation skills to resolve disputes amicably.

This role highlights his ability to facilitate communication between parties and find equitable solutions. Furthermore, Paterno's commitment to education extends beyond the courtroom; he has worked as a teacher in two inner-city elementary schools, demonstrating his dedication to community service and youth development. Paterno earned his Juris Doctor from the University of California College of the Law, San Francisco, a prestigious institution known for its rigorous legal training. His academic journey began with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from San Francisco State University, which gave him a unique understanding of human behavior—an asset in his legal practice. His educational background complements his professional experience.

This lets the attorney approach cases with both legal acumen and empathy. Outside of his legal career, Paterno leads a vibrant life filled with creativity and nature. He enjoys playing in two bands, where he expresses his focus on music as a singer-songwriter. His artistic pursuits are balanced by a love for gardening and caring for animals, including goats and chickens, in the North Bay countryside. This blend of professional dedication and personal fulfillment exemplifies Paterno's commitment to both his clients and his community, making him a well-rounded and respected figure in the legal field.
