About Rachel S.

Rachel S. Bloomekatz earned her J.D. from UCLA School of Law in 2005 after completing a B.A. at Harvard University in 2000. Her academic record set the stage for a string of appellate and public interest roles that followed. She moved quickly into clerkships and government work, experiences that have shaped a practice centered on appellate litigation and public law.

Her early legal career is marked by federal and state clerkships. In 2008 she clerked for Judge Guido Calabresi on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and in 2009 for Chief Justice Margaret Marshall at the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court. She served as an Assistant Attorney General in Massachusetts in 2010 and then clerked for Justice Stephen Breyer at the Supreme Court of the United States in 2011. These positions offered sustained exposure to complex appellate work and courtroom procedure at multiple levels.

After her clerkships she moved between public, political, and private sector roles. In 2012 she was the legal director for the campaign to reelect Senator Sherrod Brown. By 2013 she had taken a position as Associate in the Issues and Appeals group at Jones Day. She joined Gupta Wessler PLLC as a principal in 2016, and in 2019 she founded Bloomekatz Law LLC, where she serves as principal. In 2020 she took on the role of State Counsel for Ohio, a position that intersects with state-level litigation and appellate matters.

Throughout her career she has maintained ties to academia and professional organizations. She taught as an adjunct professor at The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law in 2015. She sits on the Rules Committee for the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Ohio and has been active on the Federal Bar Association, Columbus Chapter executive committee. She has held a board position with Jewish Family Services of Columbus and has been involved in local chapters of national legal organizations.

Her courtroom and counseling work spans state and federal systems. She is admitted in Ohio and Massachusetts and is authorized to appear before several federal courts of appeals, including the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 6th, 9th, 11th and D.C. Circuits, as well as the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Ohio. Casework has drawn on her appellate clerkship experience and her years handling issues and appeals in private practice.

She maintains a practice through Bloomekatz Law LLC and serves as State Counsel for Ohio, concentrating her work on appellate litigation and public law matters.
