About Paul Joseph
Paul Joseph Whelan has spent more than three decades working in Massachusetts law. He built a private practice in the mid-1990s and has moved between small firms and his own ventures ever since. That path put him in front of clients, budgets and the daily realities of running a legal business.
He opened the Law Offices of Paul J. Whelan in 1995 as a lawyer and owner. That early period gave him experience handling client matters directly and managing the tasks that come with solo practice. In 2001 he joined Perry, Malmberg and Perry as a lawyer, then moved to Sparks Law in 2003. Each role added a different perspective on how firms operate and how lawyers serve communities.
In 2008 he founded Afford Law and took on the title of CEO. The shift to founder and chief executive changed the job. He combined the practice of law with the responsibilities of running a firm. He oversaw operations, client intake and the business side of legal services while remaining involved in casework. That mix of practice and management has been a constant theme in his career.
Colleagues describe him as practical and steady in the office. He has kept a hands-on approach to client matters even when administrative duties required attention. His work has required him to balance court schedules, client expectations and firm resources. Those are familiar pressures for many lawyers who split time between practice and practice management.
Over the years he has worked in different firm settings, from a sole proprietorship to partnerships and his own company. Those transitions exposed him to a range of firm structures and client bases across Massachusetts. He has handled intake, client communication and the organizational tasks that allow a small firm to function.
He now practices at Afford Law and remains based in Massachusetts. His current practice focuses on serving individuals and businesses in the state, combining direct client representation with the ongoing responsibilities of leading a law firm.
