About Patrick J.
Patrick J. Hughes combines advanced legal scholarship with day-to-day courtroom work. He arrived at law through a scholarly route, earning an undergraduate degree from Pennsylvania State University, University Park, in 2012 and completing an S.J.D. at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law in 2015. The S.J.D. is a research doctorate, and the degree signals sustained engagement with legal questions beyond the classroom.
After completing his studies he became licensed to practice law in both Pennsylvania and California. Those dual admissions allow him to move between different procedural environments and draw on a broad set of practice rules. He has built a practice that rests on litigation and client advocacy rather than on academic life alone.
Hughes joined Hughes & Mashinski, P.C., a firm identified as personal injury lawyers. At the firm he works on civil injury matters, representing individuals who claim harm from accidents, negligent conduct and other torts. His work includes preparing cases for trial, negotiating settlements and handling motions in state and federal court. He balances litigation tasks—drafting pleadings, taking depositions and arguing hearings—with the client-facing work of explaining options and managing expectations.
Colleagues and opposing counsel describe him as methodical in the courtroom and exacting in preparation. He approaches a file by identifying key facts, assembling supporting documentation and testing the other side’s factual assertions early in discovery. That practical rhythm—fact-gather, test, refine—guides the way he runs a case. He also draws on his doctoral training when cases raise complex legal questions or require detailed statutory or regulatory analysis.
Outside of litigation he has been involved in writing and research tied to his doctoral work. He has presented findings in academic settings during and after his S.J.D. studies. That background gives him familiarity with empirical and doctrinal methods that can be useful when a case depends on technical proof or novel legal theories.
He handles matters in both Pennsylvania and California and brings an analytical approach to the personal injury files he accepts. He currently practices at Hughes & Mashinski, P.C., handling personal injury matters.
