About Patrick Byron

Patrick Byron Markey earned his J.D. from Chicago-Kent College of Law at the Illinois Institute of Technology. He studied during a period of change in legal education, when practical skills and courtroom readiness were becoming central to many law school programs. Classwork and clinic opportunities at Chicago-Kent helped shape his early understanding of dispute resolution and client advocacy.

He is licensed to practice law in Illinois. That jurisdiction has been the setting for his professional activity. He has built a practice that leans on direct engagement with parties and on alternative ways to resolve conflict outside the courtroom.

Markey pursued additional training in mediation through the Andy Miller Mediation Training program. He also completed collaborative law certification with the Collaborative Institute of Illinois. Those credentials reflect a willingness to invest time in organized processes designed to reduce the need for protracted litigation.

Over the course of his career he has handled matters that require negotiation, careful preparation for joint sessions, and attention to the practical needs of clients. He participates in mediations and collaborative processes, serving as a neutral facilitator in some instances and as an advocate in others. His work involves organizing sessions, preparing settlement documents, and coordinating with other professionals, such as financial planners or mental health practitioners, when cases call for them.

Markey’s approach is procedural and pragmatic. He prepares thoroughly before sessions and adopts methods intended to move parties toward agreement. He uses techniques taught in formal mediation training and follows the structure emphasized by collaborative law models. The goal in his practice is to create an environment in which parties can explore solutions that meet real needs rather than simply advance positional arguments.

Clients and colleagues often note his steady presence in meetings and his attention to detail in drafting agreements. He tends to favor processes that preserve relationships when that outcome is realistic. At the same time, he recognizes the necessity of protecting clients’ legal rights when negotiation stalls and litigation becomes the only option.

Markey maintains an active practice in Illinois that centers on mediation and collaborative law matters.
