About Owen
Owen Kalis studied at the University of Memphis and Ohio State University in Columbus before earning his law degree from Capital University Law School. His academic path combined out‑of‑state experience with Ohio institutions. That background set the stage for a practice rooted in the state’s courts.
He began building trial experience immediately after law school. In 2021 he worked as a criminal defense lawyer at Soroka & Associates, LLC and at the Joslyn Law Office. Later that same year he opened the Law Office of Owen Kalis. Those roles placed him in the courtroom and at counsel tables where he handled arraignments, motions, and hearings.
Kalis is admitted to practice in federal court in Ohio. He holds admission to the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio and the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Ohio. That federal admission complements his work in state criminal proceedings and allows him to represent clients in both trial and pretrial federal settings.
Outside the courtroom he is involved in the bar community. He is a member of the Columbus Bar Association and the Ohio State Bar Association. He also serves on the board of the Ohio Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. Those memberships have connected him to peers who regularly litigate similar issues and to local continuing legal education opportunities.
Colleagues describe his approach as direct and pragmatic. He tends to prioritize clear client communication and early case assessment. He prepares for hearings carefully and seeks to identify practical options for clients, whether through plea negotiations or trial strategy. He keeps filings and arguments straightforward and aims to present facts and law plainly to judges and juries.
Clients who come to his office often face urgent timelines and complex procedural rules. Kalis’s practice has involved bail hearings, preliminary matters, motions practice, and trial preparation. He draws on his federal admissions when cases raise issues that cross state and federal lines. He maintains an office that handles intake, investigation coordination, and courtroom appearances.
He currently practices from the Law Office of Owen Kalis, where his practice focuses on criminal defense matters.
