About Nicole Maile
Nicole Maile Phillips is a licensed attorney admitted to practice law in the State of California. She was admitted to the California State Bar in 1999 and holds bar number 203786. Her license is currently in active status. Ms. Phillips is an Associate Professor of Legal Research, Writing, and Analysis at the University of San Francisco School of Law, located in San Francisco, California. She has been practicing law for over 26 years, serving clients throughout the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond.
Ms. Phillips earned her Juris Doctor degree from the University of San Francisco School of Law in 2015. Prior to law school, she completed her undergraduate education at the University of California, San Diego, receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in History in 2012. During her time at USF School of Law, she co-directed the Legal Research, Writing, and Analysis Program and coached multiple moot court teams, guiding students in developing their advocacy skills.
Ms. Phillips concentrates her practice in the areas of employment law and education law. She represents employers in all aspects of employment litigation, with a focus on employment discrimination claims. Additionally, she has extensive experience representing local Bay Area school districts in various litigation and pre-litigation matters involving students, staff, and faculty. Her practice encompasses all stages of litigation, including initial case evaluation, discovery, mediation, settlement negotiations, and trial proceedings in both state and federal courts.
Throughout her career, Ms. Phillips has handled cases in the Superior Court of California for the County of San Francisco, the United States District Court for the Northern District of California, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Prior to joining the University of San Francisco School of Law, she worked as a Staff Attorney at the Institute for Justice & Democracy in Haiti (IJDH) from 2010 to 2018, where she provided legal strategy on many of Haiti’s high-profile human rights legal cases. She also served as a Haiti Analyst for Freedom House and a Legal Advisor on numerous legal cases in the United States involving human rights abuses committed in Haiti.
Ms. Phillips is an active member of the State Bar of California and the Association of Workplace Investigators. She is also a certified mediator through the San Francisco Superior Court mediation program. Ms. Phillips is fluent in English and French, allowing her to serve a diverse clientele effectively.
