About Nick
Nick Tootalian earned his J.D. from the University of Denver in 2011. He completed his legal studies during a period of shifting family law practice, and returned to Colorado to build his career.
After law school he established himself in Colorado practice. Over the years he took on a range of matters that arise in family court and civil litigation. He developed experience in contested and uncontested cases and in the courtroom. That practical background set the stage for a leadership role.
In 2019 he became managing partner at Modern Family Law. In that role he supervises case strategy, manages staff and works directly with clients. He handles complex filings, prepares for trial when necessary and oversees settlement negotiations. His management responsibilities also include mentoring junior lawyers and coordinating the firm’s workflow.
His work centers on family law. He represents clients in divorce proceedings, child custody and parenting-time disputes, financial settlements and related matters. He prepares pleadings, argues motions and seeks resolutions by negotiation when possible. When cases require more formal proceedings, he moves cases through litigation and trial preparation.
Colleagues describe him as pragmatic in court and clear with clients. He aims to present options plainly and to pursue outcomes that reflect the client’s priorities. He balances negotiation and litigation tactics based on the circumstances of each case and the interests of those he represents.
He maintains memberships in professional organizations and stays current with legal developments that affect family law practice in Colorado. That allows him to adapt practice methods as statutes and case law evolve. He also takes an active role in managing the day-to-day operations of his firm.
Today he leads Modern Family Law’s work in Colorado. He divides his time between client representation, case management and firm oversight. He currently focuses his practice on family law matters at Modern Family Law in Colorado.
