About Nicholas

Nicholas Nelson began his path toward law in the Upper Midwest. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Bemidji State University in 2013 and completed his Juris Doctor at the University of North Dakota School of Law in 2016. Those years in the classroom and in the regional legal community shaped a practical approach to legal problem solving.

While still in law school, Nelson spent time in practice as a law clerk at the Wahpeton Law Office in 2015. That experience exposed him to the daily work of a practicing attorney and provided early courtroom and office familiarity. The clerkship came during the years he was completing his J.D., giving him real-world context for doctrinal study and legal research.

After finishing law school in 2016, Nelson continued his involvement in the North Dakota legal community. He is admitted to practice in North Dakota and before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit. Those admissions reflect a practice that navigates both state-level matters and certain federal appellate procedures. His background bridges academic training and practical courtroom observation.

Nelson now works at Southern Valley Legal Services PLLC. The firm placement places him within a practice environment that serves clients across the region. Colleagues describe him as methodical in preparing filings and attentive to the procedural details that matter in court and in client meetings. He brings to the role the habits formed in law school: close attention to legal research and an interest in clear written advocacy.

Outside of the office, he remains connected to the communities where he trained and worked. Time spent in Bemidji and at the University of North Dakota informed how he approaches client matters and professional relationships. He draws on that regional experience when assessing case strategy and communicating options to clients. Nelson currently practices at Southern Valley Legal Services PLLC, serving matters in North Dakota and in proceedings before the Eighth Circuit.
