About Nathan W.

Nathan W. Poulsen combined rigorous scientific training with legal study before entering private practice. He holds three Bachelor of Science degrees in chemistry, mathematics and physics from Westminster College (2003). He went on to earn an M.A. in pharmacology from Columbia University in 2004 and an M.B.A. from Cornell University in 2006. He completed his J.D. at Fordham University School of Law in 2011.

Those academic choices point to an unusual path into law. He arrived in law school already fluent in laboratory concepts and business principles. That background has guided his professional decisions and the kinds of matters he pursues.

After law school, Poulsen served as an associate at Cooley Godward Kronish LLP. At the firm he worked on matters that drew on both scientific knowledge and legal training. He advised clients on technical legal issues and prepared filings for regulatory and intellectual property processes. He also spent time drafting and negotiating documents that required translation between technical teams and business stakeholders.

Poulsen is admitted to practice in New Jersey and New York. He is also registered with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Those credentials reflect the intersection of his science and law credentials and enable him to represent clients in patent prosecution before the USPTO as well as to provide counsel on state-law matters.

Colleagues describe him as methodical and precise. He tends to approach problems by breaking them into discrete steps and testing each element against the controlling legal standards. That style suits patent work, where technical detail and procedural deadlines matter. It also matters in transactional matters that touch on technology licensing and commercialization.

Outside the office, his academic record suggests continued interest in the convergence of science, business and law. He has maintained involvement in matters that require careful cross-disciplinary reading and explanation. He has drawn on both his pharmacology background and his MBA when analyzing the commercial implications of scientific developments.

He currently concentrates his practice on patent-related matters and client counseling tied to intellectual property and technology commercialization, handling prosecution before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and advising clients on patent strategy and related legal issues.
