About Ms. Kathleen
Ms. Kathleen Chapman is a seasoned patent attorney with over 20 years of experience in intellectual property law. Her practice focuses on patent procurement, licensing, and enforcement—areas where she has developed significant expertise. Admitted to practice in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine, she is also registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. This lets the attorney handle the requirements of patent law effectively. In 1997, Ms. Chapman earned her Juris Doctor from the University of New Hampshire School of Law.
This foundational legal education gave her the skills necessary to excel in her field. Prior to embarking on her legal career, she obtained a Master of Science in Atmospheric Science from Pennsylvania State University in 1983. During her time at Penn State, she served as a research assistant on an Air Force grant focused on satellite weather prediction—an experience that deepened her technical knowledge and analytical skills. Additionally, she holds a Bachelor of Science in Atmospheric Science from Florida State University, further solidifying her background in science and technology. In 2006, Ms. Chapman joined Burns & Levinson LLP as Of Counsel, where she specializes in various aspects of intellectual property protection. Her work encompasses patents, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets. Her technical expertise is particularly strong in computer-related inventions, telecommunications, artificial intelligence, and computer databases.
This diverse skill set allows her to serve many clients, from startups to established corporations, ensuring their intellectual property is well-protected. Before entering private practice, Ms. Chapman worked as in-house counsel at DEKA Research & Development. She also served as a U.S. government attorney with the Naval Research Laboratory, where she contributed to significant projects involving advanced technologies. Her background in both private and public sectors provides her with a unique perspective on the challenges and opportunities in intellectual property law. In addition to her legal practice, Ms. Chapman has shared her knowledge through teaching.
She has instructed on patent prosecution at the University of New Hampshire Franklin Pierce Law Center and has taught computer science courses at Pennsylvania State University. A member of the New Hampshire Bar Association, she actively participates in the Intellectual Property Section and the International Law Section. Furthermore, she is a member of the Boston Patent Law Association. Based in Mason, New Hampshire, Ms. Chapman also holds an Engineer-in-Training certification from the State of New Hampshire, underscoring her commitment to both law and engineering.
