About Mr. Michael John
Mr. Michael John Gauthier has worked in Illinois law since earning his J.D. in 2002. He began his academic path at Lake Forest College, where he completed a B.A. in politics and history in 1996. He returned to the classroom after a few years and finished law school at the Illinois Institute of Technology in 2002.
His professional life took a clear turn toward private practice. In 2010 he was a founding partner of Gauthier & Gooch, a firm he helped launch and shape during its early years. That experience put him in the position of managing cases and, increasingly, other attorneys. He later established Gauthier Family Law, the office where he now conducts his practice.
Gauthier’s work has remained rooted in the statewide practice of Illinois law. He has handled a range of matters in the family law arena. Colleagues describe him as steady in the courtroom and pragmatic at the negotiating table. He combines courtroom experience with an eye for practical resolution, and he often handles both contested hearings and out-of-court settlements.
Clients who come to his office tend to be dealing with transitional periods. He assists in resolving disputes about divorce, parenting time and support. The pace of that work requires attention to both legal detail and the personal circumstances that surround each case. He is known for setting clear expectations at the outset and for laying out realistic options as a case moves forward.
Outside the courtroom, Gauthier’s background in politics and history informs how he reads statutes and precedent. He approaches legal problems by mapping the facts to the governing law and then testing different strategies against likely outcomes. That method has guided his decisions on whether to litigate, mediate or negotiate.
In his current role at Gauthier Family Law, he oversees casework and the day-to-day practice. He continues to serve clients across Illinois, handling matters that range from routine family court filings to contested custody disputes. He keeps his practice focused on family law and the issues families bring into the legal system.
