About Mr Jerome Weldon Matthews
Mr Jerome Weldon Matthews Jr built his legal foundation on two distinct academic paths. He earned a B.A. in History and Philosophy from Tulane University in 2008. He then completed a J.D. at the University of California, Berkeley in 2011. Those degrees provided the backdrop for a quick transition into practice.
Fresh out of law school he joined Liskow and Lewis as an associate in 2011. At that regional firm he worked on a range of matters and learned how lawyering looks in a courtroom and at the drafting table. The early years in private firm practice gave him day-to-day exposure to client work, case management and the pressures of a busy docket.
Two years later he opened his own office. In 2013 he founded The Law Office of Jerome W. Matthews, Jr., LLC. Running a small firm meant shifting from one role to many: counselor, litigator, business manager and client contact. It also meant setting the office’s priorities and handling the practical demands of private practice.
Matthews is admitted to practice in Louisiana and before the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. Those admissions shape how he accepts and frames matters. They allow him to appear on state-level cases and to handle appeals that travel beyond the district court.
He maintains a presence on the West Bank and handles cases that arise in the local community. Over the course of his career he has balanced courtroom work and client counseling. His experience spans the responsibilities common to small-firm practice: motion practice, hearings, client intake and the procedural work of moving cases forward.
Colleagues describe him as practical in approach and deliberate in planning. Clients who choose a small-firm lawyer often seek direct access to the attorney; Matthews’s practice model reflects that preference.
