About Mr. J. Burton Hunter
Mr. J. Burton Hunter III has a long record in West Virginia law. He earned a B.A. in political science and history from West Virginia Wesleyan College in 1968 and received his J.D. from West Virginia University College of Law in 1972. Those formative years set the stage for a career that spans courtroom work, committee service and mediation.
Early in his career Hunter gained admission to practice in West Virginia and before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. He has appeared in both state and federal matters and has handled cases that required navigation of local family courts as well as higher appellate procedures. That mix of trial and appellate exposure shaped the work he pursued over subsequent decades.
During the 1990s he became active in professional organizations. He chaired the People’s Law School Committee for the West Virginia Association for Justice in 1992 and joined that organization’s board in the mid-1990s. He has maintained association memberships for many years, including with the American Bar Association since 1999. Within the West Virginia State Bar, he has served on the Family Law Committee, the Grievance Committee and the Social Media Committee, holding those roles since 2010.
Hunter is also credentialed as a mediator. The West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals has certified him as a family court and civil litigation mediator. That training expanded the options he offers clients and other lawyers. It also reflects a practice pattern that balances courtroom advocacy with alternative dispute resolution.
He practices from J Burton Hunter III, AND Assocs, PLLC, where he continues to manage a caseload that includes family law and civil litigation matters. His work combines trial experience, appellate practice and mediation work. He maintains a practice in family law, civil litigation and mediation.
