About Mr. Dan B. McKay

Mr. Dan B. McKay Jr. earned his undergraduate degree in government from the University of Louisiana at Monroe before completing his J.D. at Paul M. Hebert Law Center at Louisiana State University in 1976. He entered the profession at a time when Louisiana law was adjusting to a new wave of federal decisions. His education grounded him in state and federal law and set the stage for a long career in both trial and appellate work.

Early in his practice he served as a law clerk in 1980 for Tureau & Mire, Lawyers at Law in Gonzales, Louisiana. That position gave him hands-on exposure to courtroom preparation and client work in a local setting. Over the years he added courtroom roles and appellate responsibilities, handling matters that ranged from routine civil disputes to capital cases at various procedural stages.

McKay is admitted to practice in Louisiana, before the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, and in the U.S. Supreme Court. He holds certifications from the Louisiana Indigent Defense Assistance Board as Trial Lead and Appellate Lead Counsel in death penalty cases. He also completed training in Case Management and Electronic Case Filing through the United States Bankruptcy Court. Those credentials reflect sustained work in high-stakes litigation and procedural practice across different tribunals.

His record includes community and professional activity in Avoyelles Parish. He was president of the Bunkie Rotary Club for many years, serving from 1985 through 2011. He has been a member of the ACLU since 2010. Locally he has maintained an office in Bunkie, Avoyelles Parish, and has participated in the Avoyelles Parish legal community.

Colleagues describe McKay as a lawyer who has balanced trial duties and appellate work over decades. He has handled cases that required deep familiarity with Louisiana criminal procedure and federal appellate practice. He has also navigated court administrative processes tied to electronic filing and bankruptcy case management.

Now in practice in Avoyelles Parish, McKay continues to accept cases that draw on his long experience in courtroom advocacy and appellate briefing. His current practice focuses on litigation in state and federal courts and on appellate work arising from those proceedings.
