About Mitchell E.
Mitchell E. Chessman studied German studies and history at Vanderbilt University, earning his Bachelor of Arts in 2005. He went on to complete his legal education at the University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law, receiving his J.D. in 2008. Those years established the academic foundation he would build on in private practice.
He began his legal career as an associate at Clark & Washington, LLC in 2009. There he handled a range of matters and learned the day-to-day demands of representing clients in Tennessee courts. In 2013 he opened his own practice. Building a solo practice required shifting from a supporting role to the responsibilities of firm leadership and client intake.
Over time Chessman secured admission to practice before the courts most relevant to his work. He is admitted in Tennessee and is also admitted to the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Tennessee and the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Tennessee. Those credentials allow him to represent clients in both state and federal proceedings.
In his solo practice Chessman manages the tasks that come with representing individuals and businesses outside a large firm setting. He handles case preparation, filings, court appearances and client counseling. Clients who hire a solo practitioner often expect direct communication and continuity. Chessman’s office model emphasizes those elements: he is the primary contact and the person responsible for courtroom advocacy when cases move forward.
Legal writing and courtroom experience are practical parts of his practice. He crafts pleadings, argues motions and appears at hearings. Running a small office also involves administrative and business responsibilities, from managing schedules to handling billing. Those duties shape how he approaches the work and how he allocates time between client service and case development.
Over the years he has kept a regional focus, taking cases in Tennessee state courts and in the federal courts that serve the state. He maintains an active solo practice under the name Law Office of Mitchell E. Chessman and represents clients in matters brought in Tennessee and in the U.S. District Courts for the Middle and Eastern Districts of Tennessee. His current practice focuses on litigation in Tennessee and in the U.S. District Courts for the Middle and Eastern Districts of Tennessee.
