About Michelle J.
Michelle J. Douglass built a career at the intersection of law and workplace practice. She studied political science at Kutztown University of Pennsylvania, earning a B.S. in 1983. She later attended Widener University Delaware School of Law and received her J.D. in 1988. Her academic path also included studies in computer science at Stockton University, a background that has informed her work on modern workplace issues.
Her career spans litigation and employment counseling. She is certified by the New Jersey Supreme Court as a Civil Trial Lawyer, a designation that recognizes trial experience and training in New Jersey courts. That credential complements years spent representing employees and advising employers on employment policies, discipline, discrimination claims and wage-and-hour questions.
Douglass has combined legal practice with human resources consulting. She is the owner of Douglass Employment Practices, LLC, a Florida-based employment and HR consulting business. Through that company she provides policy review, workplace investigations and training for employers. She has also practiced at Burnham Douglass Lawyers At Law, where she has maintained a litigation and counseling role.
Her involvement in professional organizations is broad. She is a current member of the National Association of Employment Lawyers-NJ and the Society for Human Resource Management. She holds membership in the American Civil Liberties Union and remains active in state trial lawyer groups; she has served as Parliamentarian for the American Trial Lawyers Association-NJ. Among nonprofit and civic activities, she was Public Policy Chair for the American Association of University Women-NJ and served as a director of Tech Trek-NJ. She founded the Girls Can Club, a nonprofit focused on mentoring and leadership for young women.
Those roles reflect intertwined interests: workers’ rights, human resources practice and civic engagement. In the courtroom she has handled civil trials and pre-trial litigation. In the consulting arena she assists organizations trying to align policies with law and best practices. She moves between case work and organizational advice, bringing practical solutions to complex personnel matters.
Colleagues describe her as methodical and direct. Clients have sought her out for employment disputes, workplace investigations and for guidance on drafting personnel policies. She continues to split her time between litigation in New Jersey and employment and HR consulting in Florida. Her current practice focuses on employment law, civil trial work and HR consulting.
