About Michael T.

Michael T. Esquivel combined an undergraduate degree in economics from Stanford University with a law degree from Columbia Law School. That academic pairing framed his approach to legal questions early on. Economics taught him to look for incentives and consequences. Columbia provided the doctrine and courtroom craft.

After law school Esquivel entered private practice. He joined Fenwick & West LLP, where he built experience advising clients and working on complex matters typical of a large firm environment. His time there exposed him to teams that handle cross-disciplinary issues, and he worked alongside lawyers across practice groups.

Esquivel is admitted to practice in California. He has practiced in the state’s courts and before administrative bodies. That jurisdictional presence informs how he frames legal strategy and counsel, often balancing state law considerations with broader commercial or regulatory pressures.

Columbia’s legal training and Stanford’s economics background shape how Esquivel approaches problems. He tends to weigh legal outcomes against business realities. Colleagues describe him as methodical in parsing contracts and statutes. He pays attention to the facts that determine exposure and to the rules that set boundaries.

At Fenwick & West LLP Esquivel has worked on matters that require coordination among attorneys, clients and outside advisers. He spends time drafting filings, negotiating terms and preparing analyses that clients use to make decisions. The work often calls for clear explanations of legal risk so nonlawyers can follow the implications and choose paths forward.

Outside of specific case work, Esquivel engages in the sorts of practice tasks that shape a firm attorney’s daily life: mentoring junior lawyers, participating in internal strategy sessions and keeping abreast of changing law that affects clients in California. He has built a practice that benefits from both rigorous legal training and an analytical undergraduate foundation.

He continues to practice law in California at Fenwick & West LLP. His current practice centers on serving clients through his role at the firm’s California offices.
