About Michael L.

Michael L. Rich built a legal career that began in community law and moved into private practice. His path started in public interest work and led to running his own office in Massachusetts.

He completed a B.A. in political science at City College of the City University of New York in 1969. He earned his J.D. from Northeastern University in 1976. A few years later he took part in the Reginald Heber Smith Community Law Fellowship at Howard University School of Law, a program that places newly trained lawyers in community legal settings. That fellowship is listed in 1979 on his record.

That same year he began work with Northeast Kentucky Legal Services as a Reginald Heber Smith Community Lawyer Fellow. He remained connected to that organization and returned as a staff lawyer in 1981. Those early roles shaped his approach to client work. He practiced in settings where limited-resources clients sought help with civil legal problems. The work required managing high caseloads and handling practical problems for individuals and families.

In 1982 he opened the Law Office of Michael L. Rich. The move to private practice followed several years of hands-on public interest experience. His office is listed under his name, and his professional registration shows Massachusetts as a jurisdiction in which he practices. Over the years he has combined the procedural skills and case management developed in legal services with the autonomy of running a solo practice.

Colleagues and records describe a lawyer who came up through community-centered programs and who kept that perspective in private practice. His training under the Reginald Heber Smith fellowship and his time at Northeast Kentucky Legal Services remain defining elements of his résumé. They explain the kinds of matters he has long been prepared to address and the client base he has worked with.

As of 2026 he continues to operate the Law Office of Michael L. Rich. He practices in Massachusetts and draws on decades of experience in community law and individual client representation to handle civil matters in his private practice.
