About Michael J.
Michael J. Eisele built his career at the intersection of the sea and the courtroom. He earned a B.S. in Marine Transportation from the United States Merchant Marine Academy in 1980 after entering the Academy in 1976. He went on to law school at Georgetown University Law Center, receiving his J.D. in 1986.
Those educational choices set a clear direction. After law school he served as a judicial law clerk at the U.S. Department of Justice in 1986. He moved into private practice as an associate at Bingham, Dana and Gould in 1988. By 1993 he had taken an in-house role as Associate General Counsel in the Special Liability Group at The Travelers Companies, Inc., where he worked on insurance and liability matters that often intersected with maritime issues.
Parallel strands of public service run through his résumé. He began his maritime career as an officer in the merchant marine and worked with the International Organization of Masters, Mates, & Pilots. He also served in the U.S. Navy Reserve, retiring at the rank of Commander. In 1999 he took on a regulatory role as a member of the Connecticut Pilot Commission, a position that placed him close to questions about pilotage, harbor safety and state oversight of maritime operations.
His professional affiliations reflect those years at sea and in law. He holds Proctor-in-Admiralty certification from the Maritime Law Association of the United States and remains an active member of that organization. He has taught as adjunct faculty at the University of Connecticut School of Law, beginning in 2010, sharing practical and doctrinal lessons from admiralty litigation and maritime regulation with law students.
Eisele’s career spans private practice, corporate counsel work, regulatory service and teaching. His background in marine transportation and his legal training created a practice that touches admiralty law, maritime insurance and pilotage issues. Colleagues and students know him for a steady, pragmatic approach to complex maritime problems. He continues to maintain professional ties to maritime institutions and teaches on subjects related to admiralty and maritime law.
He currently maintains a practice handling admiralty and maritime matters, maritime insurance and pilotage issues.
