After law school, he moved to Colorado, where he began his legal career as a VISTA Volunteer attorney and later served as a staff attorney at Pikes Peak Legal Services in Colorado Springs. In 1979, he relocated to Boulder, assuming the directorship of the University of Colorado Student Union Legal Services Office. By 1981, he joined the University of Colorado Law School faculty, directing the Institute of Law and Aging and teaching as an Associate Clinical Professor in the CU Legal Aid and Defender Program. In 1983, Michael and his wife, Nancy Ziglar, moved to Ouray, Colorado — The following year, he co-founded The Tisdel Law Firm, P.C., with Rich Tisdel.
Since 1984, he has been a shareholder and partner in the firm, which is now known as The Tisdel Law Firm, P.C. He has also served as the Ouray County Attorney from 1995 to 2000 and as an assistant County Attorney from 1985 to 1995. Throughout his career, Michael has been actively involved in the legal community. He served as the president of the 7th Judicial District Bar Association from 1986 to 1987 and was a member of the 7th Judicial District Bench/Bar Relations Committee. He also contributed to the Ouray School District as a member and president of the District Accountability Committee.
