Michael D. Maurer is the founder and principal attorney at Maurer Law, a personal injury law firm with offices in Cornelius and Cary, North Carolina. He has been licensed to practice law in North Carolina since 2011 and in Florida since 2006. His firm handles cases involving motor vehicle accidents, wrongful death, and other serious personal injuries. Born and raised in Knoxville, Tennessee, Mr. Maurer earned his Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from Florida State University in 1993. After completing his undergraduate studies, he served as a police officer and detective with the Tallahassee Police Department from 1996 to 2001. During his tenure, he investigated numerous accidents and serious crimes, gaining experience in accident reconstruction and criminal investigations.
In 2002, Mr. Maurer began attending night classes at Barry University School of Law in Orlando, Florida, while working full-time as an injury claims investigator for insurance companies. He earned his Juris Doctor in 2005. After law school, he served as an Assistant State Attorney in Florida from 2005 to 2008, handling over fifty jury trials. He then transitioned to defense work, representing major auto insurance companies such as GEICO and State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company from 2008 to 2012. In 2012, Mr. Maurer co-founded Maurer Law, focusing on representing individuals in personal injury cases. He became the sole owner in 2014.
His experience on both sides of personal injury claims has provided him with unique insights into the strategies employed by insurance companies. This perspective enables him to effectively advocate for his clients' interests. Mr. Maurer is board-certified as a Civil Trial Specialist by the National Board of Trial Advocacy, a certification he first obtained in 2013 and renewed in 2019. He has maintained an "AV Preeminent" rating from Martindale-Hubbell since 2013, reflecting the highest level of professional excellence as recognized by his peers. He is also a member of the North Carolina Advocates for Justice and the 10th Judicial District Bar Association. In addition to his legal practice, Mr. Maurer has contributed to legal education as a guest instructor at the National Institute of Trial Advocacy (NITA) at Georgetown Law School in Washington, D.C.
