About Michael
Michael Cohen trained as a criminal defense lawyer at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where he earned his J.D. in 1991 after beginning law studies in 1987. His time in Madison coincided with a period of intense study in criminal defense practice and procedure. The coursework and clinics there shaped his approach to courtroom work and client advocacy.
After law school he established his practice in Wisconsin. Over the years he built a small firm that emphasizes hands-on representation. He is the founder and managing member of Cohen Law Offices. That role has kept him involved in the daily work of litigation as well as the administrative demands of running a law practice.
Cohen holds a certification as a Lawyer-Scientist, ACH-CHAL. He maintains memberships in a number of professional organizations. His current affiliations include the Eau Claire County Bar Association, the American Bar Association, the Wisconsin Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, and the State Bar of Wisconsin. He has used those connections to stay current on changes in criminal law and procedure and to participate in continuing legal education.
In practice he concentrates on criminal defense in Wisconsin courts. He represents clients facing a range of criminal charges. His caseload has included contested hearings, negotiated resolutions and jury trials. He often handles pretrial motions and evidentiary issues that arise in criminal proceedings. He also advises clients on the collateral consequences of criminal convictions, such as licensing and employment concerns.
Colleagues describe him as steady in the courtroom and deliberate in preparation. He tends to favor careful fact development and close attention to courtroom rules. That approach serves both in plea discussions and in trial strategy. He has worked with investigators and expert witnesses when cases raised complex factual or scientific questions.
Outside the courtroom he oversees firm operations and mentors younger lawyers at Cohen Law Offices. He balances casework with management duties and remains active in bar groups that address criminal defense practice. He continues to teach himself through seminars and association meetings.
He currently practices law in Wisconsin, where he leads Cohen Law Offices and represents clients in criminal matters across the state. His current practice focus is criminal defense in Wisconsin courts.
