About Melvin O.
Melvin O. Shaw built a foundation in political science and journalism before turning to law. He earned a B.A. in Political Science from the University of Missouri–Columbia in 1995 and followed that with an M.A. in Journalism from the University of Iowa in 1997. He returned to the University of Iowa for legal studies and received his J.D. in 2004. The mix of political science, journalism and law informs the way he reads documents and frames arguments.
He began practicing law in Iowa in the mid-2000s and opened The Law Office of Melvin O. Shaw, P.L.C. in 2006. Since then he has maintained a solo practice based in Iowa. Court filings and client meetings have been part of a steady practice routine. Over time he has balanced case work with time on local boards and commissions.
Outside the office he has been active in professional and civic circles. He has held membership in the Iowa State Bar Association and the American Bar Association since 2006. Locally, he is a member of the Johnson County Bar Association. His community roles extend to nonprofit and municipal work. He joined the board of The Housing Fellowship in 2012 and has served on the board of Systems Unlimited, Inc. since 2014. He has been a member of the Charter Review Commission for the City of Iowa City since 2014. Those positions have kept him involved in housing and municipal governance questions.
Shaw’s background in journalism appears in how he prepares for hearings and communicates with clients. He places emphasis on clear written work and concise oral presentation. That approach matters in depositions and pleadings. It also shapes how he advises people who are unfamiliar with legal process and paperwork.
Over nearly two decades of practicing in Iowa, Shaw has combined private practice with board service and municipal involvement. He keeps an office in Iowa and continues to meet with clients, draft filings and take part in community boards. He practices at The Law Office of Melvin O. Shaw, P.L.C., serving clients in Iowa.
