About Melissa
Melissa Hill took a steady path into the law. She earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1984 and completed her J.D. at the University of North Carolina School of Law in 1987. Those years in Chapel Hill shaped a practical approach to practice and an early interest in courtroom work.
She launched her legal career at Tharrington Smith in 1987. Early on she gravitated to trial work and criminal matters. Over time she built a practice that draws on courtroom procedure, evidence rules and advocacy before judges and juries. Colleagues describe her as methodical in preparation and straightforward in court.
Hill maintains an active presence in the profession through a long list of local and national organizations. She is a current member of the North Carolina State Bar and the North Carolina Bar Association. She holds memberships in the American Bar Association and the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. She also belongs to the North Carolina Advocates for Justice, the Association of Trial Lawyers of America and the Wake County Bar Association. Locally, she participates in the Wake County Academy of Criminal Trial Lawyers. In the North Carolina Bar Association she serves as an officer on the Criminal Justice Council, a role that involves meeting with peers on policy and practice issues.
Her day-to-day work involves criminal defense and trial practice. She handles hearings, pretrial motions and jury trials. That work demands attention to procedural detail and an ability to present complex factual narratives clearly. The organizations she belongs to reflect those professional priorities: trial skills, criminal procedure and appellate awareness all play a part in how she prepares cases.
Hill’s colleagues point to a steady, courtroom-oriented practice rather than a public-facing profile built on headlines. She participates in continuing legal education and local bar activities. She also engages informally with other trial lawyers in Wake County to discuss strategy and developments in criminal law.
She continues to base her practice at Tharrington Smith LLP. Her current practice focuses on criminal defense and trial advocacy in North Carolina courts.
