About Melanie
Melanie Tardell earned an A.S. from Cabrillo College in 2012 and went on to receive her J.D. from Monterey College of Law in 2016. She completed her formal legal education during a period of steady involvement in community dispute resolution. Her academic record shows an early interest in practical conflict management and law.
Her first recorded role in conflict resolution came in 2014, when she served as a divorce mediator and small claims advisor at the Mandel Gisnet Center for Conflict Management. That position placed her in direct contact with people handling family disputes and modest civil claims, and it marked the start of her transition from informal advising to legal practice. In 2018 she worked as an interning lawyer at the Law Office of Heidi Simonson, gaining courtroom and office experience under established counsel.
By 2019 Tardell was operating as a self-employed lawyer. She formalized that work in 2020 when she founded Signified Law and took on the title of Founder and Principal Lawyer. The move from intern and adviser to firm principal happened within a few years. It reflects a steady progression through different aspects of family law practice and mediation work.
Tardell holds certifications in Family Law Mediation and Community Mediation from the Conflict Resolution Center of Santa Cruz County. Those credentials sit alongside professional memberships that include the California Lawyers Association, Family Law Section, which she joined in 2017, and a membership with Maximum Lawyer beginning in 2020. These affiliations indicate ongoing engagement with peers in family law and mediation circles.
Her practice history mixes alternative dispute resolution and traditional legal representation. Early roles emphasized mediation and small claims advising. Later work added private legal practice and firm leadership. That blend informs how she approaches cases: attention to negotiated outcomes supported by legal analysis when litigation becomes necessary.
At Signified Law, Tardell oversees the firm's legal work and continues to handle cases directly. She draws on mediation training when possible and prepares for court when needed. Her current practice centers on family law and mediation matters.
