About Megan Mares

Megan Mares Kalm earned her law degree from the University of New Mexico in 2006 after completing a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice at New Mexico State University in 2002. She arrived at law school on the heels of undergraduate study that emphasized the criminal justice system. Those early academic choices set the tone for a career that has moved between appellate work and private practice.

Her first notable post-law-school position was a law clerkship at the New Mexico Supreme Court in 2009. The clerkship placed her at the center of appellate review and legal research. It exposed her to complex briefing, opinion drafting and the mechanics of high-level judicial decision-making. Colleagues from that period remember her attention to detail and willingness to tackle thorny procedural issues.

In 2010 she began practicing at Kalm Law Office, P.C. She has spent much of her professional life there, shifting from the inward-facing work of a courtroom clerk to client-facing advocacy. Over the years she has handled pleadings, motions and courtroom appearances while also returning frequently to appellate questions that mirror her earlier court experience.

Her career combines two complementary strands: appellate analysis and hands-on legal practice. The Supreme Court clerkship sharpened her legal research and writing. Time spent practicing law broadened that skill set into case management and client counseling. She has brought those capabilities together on matters that required both careful legal argument and practical case strategy.

Clients and peers describe her style as methodical. She is inclined to break down complex legal problems into discrete questions. That approach has shaped how she prepares cases and how she communicates the stakes to clients. She has also maintained ties to the local legal community, participating in professional conversations about appellate procedure and trial advocacy.

She currently practices at Kalm Law Office, P.C., representing clients in matters before New Mexico courts. Her practice continues to draw on the appellate experience from her clerkship alongside the litigation work she has conducted as a lawyer.
