About Matthew T Taylor

Matthew T Taylor Sr. took a nontraditional path into law after building an academic foundation in the humanities and social sciences. He earned a Bachelor of Arts from Old Dominion University in 1987 and later completed a Master of Science at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa in 1995. Those degrees preceded a career that has moved between private practice and public defense.

He began practicing as a sole practitioner in 1999. Four years later he helped establish Taylor Reveley and Associates and carried the title of founding partner. In 2006 he left private practice for a period to serve as an assistant public defender, handling cases for indigent clients. The work covered both adult and juvenile matters and included felony and misdemeanor prosecutions. In 2016 he is listed as serving as president of Taylor Law Assoc. P.C., and that same year he is recorded as a guardian ad litem under the Virginia State Bar.

Taylor’s certifications reflect that mixed record. He holds credentialing for adult and juvenile felony and misdemeanor work in indigent defense. He is also certified as a guardian ad litem by the Virginia State Bar. On the appellate side, records show admissions in multiple federal circuits: the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th U.S. Courts of Appeals. Those admissions enable him to handle matters that progress beyond trial courts.

Colleagues say his practice has moved back and forth between court-appointed public defense and private litigation. He has experience managing trial caseloads in criminal contexts and has taken on guardianship assignments in family and juvenile courts. That blend of roles has required shifting from zealous advocacy in contested hearings to the fact-intensive work of representing minors and incapacitated adults through court-appointed guardianships.

Today he combines those strands of practice. He operates from an office role at Taylor Law Assoc. P.C. and continues to accept appointed defense work and guardian ad litem assignments. He currently represents clients in indigent defense matters and serves as a guardian ad litem.
