About Matthew Steven
Matthew Steven Mansfield built his path to law on a foundation in the natural and social sciences. He earned a B.S. in environmental science and psychology from Hobart and William Smith Colleges in 2000. He went on to receive his J.D. from Brooklyn Law School in 2003.
He began practicing in New York after law school. Over the years he has handled a range of matters at the state and local level. Those matters have often touched on regulatory requirements, permitting questions and civil disputes. He has worked on projects that required translating technical environmental information into legal arguments and clear advice for clients.
Mansfield’s undergraduate background informs his legal work. Training in environmental science gives him a technical frame for cases that involve contamination, land use or compliance questions. Studies in psychology shape how he assesses witness testimony and client communication. He combines those perspectives when preparing factual records and presenting issues to opposing parties or decision makers.
Colleagues describe him as methodical in building factual records and attentive to evidence. His practice has involved negotiating with regulators and private parties, drafting submissions, and preparing for hearings. He has spent years responding to regulatory inquiries and helping clients understand the practical implications of agency guidance and local ordinances. He prefers clear, direct explanations over legal jargon when advising clients.
Outside of casework he has maintained ties to the legal community in New York. He keeps current on changes to administrative and environmental statutes and on court decisions that affect municipal and private projects. That ongoing attention helps him anticipate issues that can arise during permitting or transactional timelines.
After more than two decades in practice, Mansfield approaches each matter with a blend of technical awareness and practical legal judgment. He continues to practice in New York, concentrating on environmental and regulatory matters as well as related civil litigation and administrative work.
