About Matthew R.
Matthew R. Porter built a career that crosses public service, litigation support and tax practice. He began academically at Ohio Wesleyan University, earning a B.A. in Economics and Business Management in 2004. He then completed a J.D. at Capital University Law School in 2008 and returned to Capital for an LL.M. in Taxation, awarded in 2012.
Porter’s work history moves between law and related fields. Early on he worked as a real estate appraiser at The Charles R. Porter Company in 2004. He held a legal internship at Schiff & Associates in 2003 and later served as a legal assistant in the Legal Office of the Governor of Ohio in 2006. In 2007 he worked as an intake officer for the Columbus City Prosecutor’s Office, gaining exposure to public-sector case handling.
After finishing law school he practiced immigration law at Shihab & Associates beginning in 2008. That experience gave him direct client contact on matters that often intersect with federal agencies. By 2011 he was working as a tax lawyer at Nardone Law Group, LLC. In 2014 he began practicing at Porter Law Office, LLC as a tax attorney and has carried tax matters in private practice since then.
He is admitted to practice in Ohio and before the Ohio State Supreme Court, the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Ohio and the U.S. Tax Court. He also holds a Certifying Acceptance Agent (CAA) designation from the Internal Revenue Service. Professional memberships include the American Immigration Lawyers Association, the American Bar Association (member since 2012), the Columbus Bar Association (since 2010) and prior membership in the Ohio State Bar Association from 2010 to 2018.
Porter’s academic focus on taxation and his background in economics and real estate appraisal inform his work on tax compliance and disputes. He handles matters that range from preparation and review of tax filings to representation before tax authorities. His experience across immigration and tax practice gives him familiarity with cases that touch both areas.
In private practice he has concentrated on tax law for over a decade. He currently concentrates his practice on tax law, tax controversy, and related immigration tax matters.
