About Matthew

Matthew Maddox earned his undergraduate degree from Georgetown University, graduating in 2003 with a B.A. in Economics, Mathematics and Government. He continued his legal studies at the University of Michigan Law School and received his J.D. in 2008. Those academic credentials set up a career centered on disputes over benefits and insurance coverage.

After law school Maddox built a practice addressing long-term disability and ERISA-related matters. He now practices from The Maddox Firm LLC, where he handles claims, administrative appeals and litigation tied to employee benefit plans. His work involves parsing plan documents, assembling medical records and pressing claims through the appeals process and into court when necessary.

He is admitted to practice in New York and New Jersey and has bar admission that allows him to appear before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. He maintains membership in the State Bar of New York since 2009 and is active in professional circles through the New York State Bar Association and the American Bar Association. Those affiliations keep him connected to developments in ERISA case law and insurance regulation.

Clients come to Maddox for representation in denials of long-term disability benefits, often after an insurer declines coverage or limits payments. He represents individuals in administrative hearings and, when a matter cannot be resolved, in federal court under ERISA. The cases often require detailed review of medical evidence and an attention to plan terms; Maddox's practice centers on that combination of facts and contract interpretation.

In court he pursues remedies available under the governing benefit plan and applicable federal law. He files complaints, handles discovery and prepares substantive briefing on why benefits should be paid. He also works to move cases efficiently, aiming to resolve claims through negotiation when that is practical, and through litigation when it is not.

Outside of casework Maddox participates in bar association activities that relate to insurance and employee benefits law. He follows appellate developments in the Second Circuit and state-level decisions that affect disability claims. He splits his time between counseling clients through the administrative process and pursuing judicial review when insurers refuse to pay. He currently practices at The Maddox Firm LLC, concentrating on long-term disability and ERISA matters.
