About Matthew J.

Matthew J. Maiona earned his J.D. from Suffolk University Law School in 1995 after completing a Bachelor of Arts at Boston College in 1992. He moved into practice soon after finishing law school and has spent his career focused on immigration law and related federal practice. The early academic credentials set the stage for a practice that spans district and appellate work.

His first notable firm role came in 1996 when he joined MAIONA & MAIONA, PC as a partner. That period established his footing in case work and client counseling. He handled a steady docket of immigration matters and developed experience in filings before federal courts and administrative agencies.

In 2011 he took on a leadership role as managing partner at Maiona Ward Immigration Law. He has overseen the firm’s operations and steered case strategy across employer-sponsored immigration, family petitions, and removal defense. In 2015 he returned to Suffolk University Law School, this time as an adjunct professor teaching Business Immigration Law. The course work drew on his day-to-day practice and the regulatory detail that governs corporate and employment-based immigration cases.

Maiona is admitted to practice in Massachusetts and in the federal system. His credentials include admission to the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit. He has been a member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association since 1999 and joined the Immigration Section of the Federal Bar Association in 2014. Those professional ties have kept him engaged with changing policy and case law.

Colleagues describe him as methodical in the preparation of filings and clear in courtroom presentation. He has handled cases that require coordination between immigration authorities and federal courts. That practical experience informs both his teaching and the firm’s case handling. He is comfortable in hearings and briefed appeals when cases have moved beyond the agency level.

In practice he works for both employers and individuals on petitions, waivers, and removal matters. He also counsels employers on visa options and compliance questions. He maintains an active role at Maiona Ward Immigration Law and continues to teach occasional courses that intersect with his case work. Currently he concentrates his practice on employment-based immigration, family petitions, and removal defense.
