About Matthew J.
Matthew J. Cherney earned his B.A. from Carthage College in 2000 and his J.D. from Western Michigan University Cooley Law School in 2004. He completed a traditional liberal arts undergraduate program before moving on to study law. Those formative years set the stage for a career that spans more than two decades of practice across state lines.
After law school, Cherney entered private practice and built experience in multiple legal settings. He is admitted to practice in both Illinois and Georgia, which has allowed him to handle matters that touch on the laws of more than one state. Over the years he has worked from offices in Georgia, maintaining a professional presence in both Marietta and Woodstock. His career path reflects steady work in regional markets rather than high-profile national platforms.
Cherney’s work has required attention to the procedural differences between jurisdictions and an ability to manage cases that move between state systems. He has guided clients through filings, hearings and negotiations, and he has navigated the practical demands of running a practice with more than one office. Colleagues describe him as methodical and pragmatic; clients have relied on him for clear explanations of legal steps and likely outcomes.
Today Cherney operates out of offices in Marietta and Woodstock, serving clients in the surrounding communities and beyond. He continues to practice under the licenses he holds in Illinois and Georgia and handles matters that arise in those states. His current practice focuses on representing clients in matters that require knowledge of both Illinois and Georgia law.
