About Matt
Matt Sharp took a conventional path into law and arrived with steady preparation. He earned a J.D. from St. Mary’s University School of Law in 2003 after completing a B.A. in History at the University of Texas at Austin. Those years laid the groundwork for a practice shaped by courtroom work and criminal defense training.
Sharp was admitted to the State Bar of Texas in 2006. Early in his career he worked as a law clerk in 2005 at Edward L. Piña & Associates. That experience exposed him to courtroom procedures and first-chair preparation. In 2007 he held associate positions at two firms, David S. Sprecher & Associates and Rene Gonzalez & Associates, where he handled a range of criminal matters and learned case management under experienced trial attorneys.
He opened The Law Office of Matthew D. Sharp in 2011. The move to his own practice followed several years of litigation work and a desire to run his own docket. Over time he expanded trial skills through continuing education and memberships in trial-oriented organizations. Those steps informed how he approaches cases and how he prepares for hearings and jury trials.
Sharp maintains memberships in several professional groups that align with criminal defense and civil liberties work. He is active in the Harris County Criminal Lawyers Association and the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association. He also holds membership in the Gerry Spence Trial Lawyers’ College, an organization known for trial training, and in the American Civil Liberties Union of Texas. He has been listed with The State Bar of Texas since his admission in 2006 and remains a current member.
Colleagues and clients describe him as methodical in preparation and direct in the courtroom. He tends to emphasize factual development, witness work, and motion practice. His background includes both investigative case preparation and courtroom advocacy. He has represented clients at varying stages of criminal proceedings and in matters that touch on civil liberties questions.
Sharp runs a small practice out of The Law Office of Matthew D. Sharp. He represents clients in criminal defense and civil liberties matters at his firm, where he continues to try cases and handle contested hearings.
