About Mark

Mark Thompson came to law from an unlikely starting point: a liberal arts college degree in computer science. He earned a B.A. from Luther College in 1997, then returned to school for a J.D. at the University of Iowa, graduating in 2001. The combination of technical training and formal legal education shaped a pragmatic approach to problem solving early in his career.

He joined the Iowa legal community in the early 2000s and became a member of the Iowa State Bar in 2004. That membership has been continuous. In the years that followed he moved between courtroom work and projects that paired judicial procedure with community programs. In 2010 he served as defense counsel for the Johnson County Drug Treatment Court, handling cases that intersected criminal matters and rehabilitative services.

Thompson’s peers recognized his interest in professional development and ethical practice. He joined the Dean Mason Ladd American Inn of Court in 2005 and served in officer roles, including Treasurer and Secretary in 2012. He held the Inn’s Barrister designation through 2021, participating in programs intended to refine courtroom technique and mentor newer lawyers.

In 2016 Thompson was appointed a magistrate judge on the Iowa Judicial Branch. The role shifted his day-to-day responsibilities from advocacy to adjudication. As a magistrate, he has overseen preliminary matters, small claims and other proceedings commonly assigned to the magistrate bench. The position required balancing case law and local court procedures while managing a steady docket.

Those who work with him describe a lawyer who moves between practical detail and procedural clarity. He is comfortable explaining rulings in plain terms and applying statutory frameworks to routine disputes. His background in computer science sometimes informs how he approaches document-heavy matters and evidence that presents technical issues.

Thompson continues to practice in Iowa’s courts. He remains active in bar activities and court programs and applies his courtroom experience to the magistrate duties he was chosen to perform in 2016. He currently focuses his practice on judicial responsibilities and matters arising in the state’s magistrate courts.
