About Mark
Mark Ballantyne entered law school after completing his undergraduate degree at Wake Forest University in 2008. He earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Richmond School of Law in 2012. Those formative years combined classroom learning and practical exercises. They set the stage for a career in legal practice in Virginia.
He began his career on the associate track at Cooley Godward Kronish LLP. As an associate, he joined a team that handles a range of transactional and litigation matters. His role has involved the day-to-day responsibilities typical for early-career attorneys at a large firm: drafting documents, conducting legal research, and supporting more senior lawyers on client matters. Colleagues describe him as methodical and approachable, someone who complements team efforts by attending to detail and process.
Ballantyne’s education shaped his approach to law. At Wake Forest he completed a liberal arts curriculum that emphasized writing and analysis. At the University of Richmond School of Law he worked through core courses that form the backbone of legal practice and participated in clinics and seminars that emphasize practical skills. That blend of liberal arts and professional training informs how he reviews complex materials and communicates findings to clients and colleagues.
Though his career remains centered in Virginia, Ballantyne’s work has included interactions across practice groups and with outside counsel in other jurisdictions. He is accustomed to the rhythms of firm life: balancing deadlines, coordinating document reviews, and refining arguments under time pressure. He has contributed to team efforts on matters requiring careful project management and plain-language explanation for clients who are not lawyers.
Outside the office, Ballantyne has maintained ties to his alma maters and to the legal community in Virginia. He attends bar-related events and participates in continuing legal education to keep current on developments that affect his practice. Those activities help him stay aware of shifting rules and standards that can change how cases and transactions are handled.
Now practicing in Virginia, Ballantyne continues his work as an associate at Cooley Godward Kronish LLP. He concentrates his practice on serving clients through firm-based teamwork and routine litigation and transactional support, practicing law in Virginia and handling matters appropriate to his role at the firm.
