About Mario R
Mario R Madrid built a legal path that started in the classroom and moved quickly into public service. He earned a B.A., double majoring in history and communications, from the University of Houston in 1993. He then completed his law degree at South Texas College of Law in 1996.
He entered public practice soon after law school. In 1997 he served as an assistant district lawyer in Galveston County. That early work involved courtroom time and case preparation on the prosecution side. The experience gave him a grounding in trial procedure and local criminal practice.
After a period in public office, he shifted direction toward defense work. By 1999 he was practicing criminal defense through Madrid Law. He later took on a judicial role as an associate judge for the City of Houston in 2008. That mix of roles — prosecutor, judge, defense attorney — has informed how he evaluates evidence and anticipates courtroom strategy.
Madrid is board certified in Criminal Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. He belongs to several professional organizations that reflect both practice and procedure: the Texas Board of Legal Specialization, the National College of DUI Defense, the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association, the Harris County Criminal Lawyers Association, and sections of the Texas State Bar that address municipal judges and criminal justice. He is also active in the Harris County Bar Association and the College of the State Bar of Texas.
His work centers on criminal matters in Texas. Over the years he has handled a range of cases at different levels of state court. His background in municipal judging and in the district attorney’s office means he often brings a perspective that considers how judges, prosecutors and defense counsel approach a case.
Clients and colleagues describe him as someone who relies on courtroom experience and procedural knowledge rather than on rhetoric. He pays attention to the elements of a charge, the admissibility of evidence, and the structure of plea negotiations when they occur. That approach is reflected in his memberships, including an affiliation with the National College of DUI Defense, which signals regular work on impaired driving cases among other criminal matters.
He maintains an office under the name Madrid Law Office and continues to practice criminal law in Texas. His current practice focuses on criminal defense work in state courts.
