About Margaret M

Margaret M Barrett trained first as an accountant and then as a lawyer. She earned a B.A. in accounting from the University of Saint Thomas in 1981 and completed a combined JD/MBA at William Mitchell College of Law in 1991. Those credentials set the stage for a career that blends financial and legal work.

She is admitted to practice in Minnesota. Early career details are not listed here, but her later professional activity centers on estate and elder law. Over the years she has joined organizations that reflect those interests. In 2013 she became a member of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys and also joined Minnesota Women Lawyers and the Ramsey County Bar Association. Two years later she added membership in the Christian Legal Society of Minnesota.

Her involvement in bar organization work includes a leadership role in the Minnesota State Bar Association. In 2016 she served as Communications Committee Chair for the Elder Law Section. That role involved coordinating information and outreach for section members, and it placed her in regular contact with other practitioners who handle decisions about care, incapacity planning, and the legal concerns that accompany aging.

The combination of an accounting background and graduate-level business training is evident in the subjects she handles. Clients and colleagues describe a pragmatic approach to matters such as estate planning, powers of attorney, and probate administration. Her memberships in elder law and women’s bar groups reflect a practice orientation toward older clients and the families who advise them. She also participates in local bar activities through the Ramsey County Bar Association.

Bar association work has been a constant thread alongside client work. Her service on the Elder Section communications committee shows an interest in how practitioners exchange information and keep up with changes in law and policy. That interest aligns with a practice that requires attention to both legal detail and financial implication.

She is currently associated with Safe Harbor Estate Law. That practice handles estate planning and elder-law related matters in Minnesota. Her current practice focuses on estate planning, elder law, and related legal services for individuals and families.
