About M. Shawn

M. Shawn Cardwell earned his law degree from the University of New Mexico, receiving his J.D. in 2006. He arrived at law school after earlier undergraduate work and finished a course of study that prepared him for practice across multiple jurisdictions. The classroom shaped his legal approach, and he moved into practice intent on handling a broad array of matters for individuals and businesses.

Cardwell built his bar credentials across state and federal lines. He is admitted to practice in Tennessee and Alaska, and he holds admission to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. Those admissions have allowed him to take on cases that extend beyond a single state court, and he has used that reach to represent clients in appeals as well as trial-level matters.

Membership in local and state bar organizations has been a steady part of his professional life. He belongs to the Tennessee Bar Association and is active in the Memphis Bar Association. Those affiliations place him in regular contact with colleagues across a range of practice areas and provide a forum for continuing legal education and professional exchange.

His practice is organized through a solo office. The Law Office of M. Shawn Cardwell, Esq. serves as the base for client work and courtroom appearances. Operating a small office has allowed Cardwell to manage matters personally and to maintain direct client contact from intake through resolution. He handles filings, motions and oral argument without outsourcing the core tasks of representation.

Colleagues describe him as methodical in courtroom preparation and attentive to procedural detail. He tends to emphasize clear written work and practical planning when approaching litigation timelines. That style shows through when preparing briefs for appellate review and when managing discovery and pretrial strategy in trial courts.

Outside of casework, Cardwell participates in bar-sponsored programs and continuing education offerings. He uses those opportunities to stay current on rule changes and evolving precedent in the jurisdictions where he practices. The Memphis legal community has been a recurring professional touchpoint in his career.

He currently practices under the Law Office of M. Shawn Cardwell, Esq., handling legal matters across Tennessee and Alaska and representing clients in the Sixth Circuit.
