About M. Colby
M. Colby Freeman combined a study of rhetoric and law early in his education. He earned a B.A. in Rhetoric from the University of California, Berkeley in 2006. He then completed a J.D. at the University of San Francisco School of Law in 2009. After practicing law, he returned to study and received an LL.M. in Taxation from Golden Gate University School of Law in 2019.
Those academic steps inform his approach to legal work. Freeman is admitted to practice in California and before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. His credentials reflect both state and federal competence, which can matter in matters that touch on appellate issues or federal questions.
Over the course of his career he has pursued matters that require careful analysis of financial and legal records. His additional graduate training in taxation gives him tools for examining the tax consequences that sometimes accompany family law disputes. He reads complex financial materials closely and often looks for implications that will affect outcomes, whether in negotiation or in court.
Colby Freeman’s legal style bears traces of his rhetoric background. He aims for clarity in briefs and in court statements. He also prepares clients to understand the trade-offs in settlement and litigation. His work involves translating dense legal and financial concepts into terms clients can act on and judges can follow.
He maintains current memberships in professional associations and participates in the professional community. That involvement keeps him familiar with changes in law and procedure that can affect case planning. Colleagues describe him as methodical in case preparation and steady in courtroom settings.
He practices at Doyle Quane Freeman Family Law Group, where he handles family law matters and the financial issues that often accompany them. He currently practices family law at Doyle Quane Freeman Family Law Group.
